Very loosely based on the Balzac short story 'El Verdugo' this historical romance is set in French occupied Spain during the Napoleonic Wars.
A French captain falls in love with a Spanish noblewoman. She is engaged to the leader of the Spanish Resistance.
The French Army and the Spanish Resistance fight a battle, the French win. The Resistance leader is caught and sentenced to death along with his parents, his siblings and his fiancee.
The French captain questions where his loyalty lies.
